Life story
Martyr pilot Aliyev Khayyam Alikhan oglu was born on December 17, 1990, in a family originally from Amirjan, descending from oil magnate and philanthropist Murtuza Mukhtarov. Khayyam Aliyev studied at the Albert Agharonov Secondary School No. 154, named after the National Hero of Azerbaijan, from 1997 to 2008. From 2008 to 2013, he completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees at the National Aviation Academy. Serving as a pilot in the Border Troops, he rose to the rank of captain. He was offered a teaching position at the Training Center of the National Aviation Academy, but he chose the challenging and responsible path of serving his homeland. Khayyam, the elder of two brothers, fought on the front lines during the 44-day Patriotic War with his brother Ferman — one on the ground and the other in the air — completing secret missions with honor and bravery. Both displayed great courage and heroism and returned home safely, but 1 year and 22 days after the Victory, Khayyam became a martyr. We lost not only a highly skilled pilot but also a veteran of the Patriotic War. Captain Khayyam Aliyev Alikhan oglu served as a pilot in the Border Troops and became a martyr on November 30, 2021, during military exercises when the "Mi-17" helicopter of the State Border Service crashed at the "Garahabat" aviation range in the Khizi region. Khayyam was a young pilot with a promising future. He actively participated in testing the latest aircraft and, due to his knowledge of several foreign languages, was often sent on missions abroad. Every time he returned with diplomas, certificates, and letters of appreciation as a highly qualified young specialist. Khayyam is the only martyr-pilot in the country who was posthumously awarded the 3rd degree "For Service to the Homeland" order by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on August 17, 2022. A street in Baku, where School No. 154 is located, was named after Pilot Khayyam Aliyev. In honor of his service and his exemplary life, a high-quality documentary, song, and music video were produced, as young generations must learn and remember the heroic path and bravery of thousands of martyrs like Khayyam.
